Durga Puja festival is celebrated from the sixth to tenth day of bright lunar fortnight. Durga Puja festiva is celebrated because on this day Goddess Durga defeated the evil buffalo demon Mahisasur. Thus, Durga Pooja festival exemplifies the victory of Good over Evil. In Bengal, Durga is worshipped as Durgotinashini, who destroys all the evils and protects her followers. During Durga Pooja people also worship Lord Shiva, who is Durga's companion because Durga is is an aspect of Goddess Parvati.  The Gods and Godsessess like Ganesha, karthikeya, Lakshmi ans Saraswati are also worshipped as they are believed to be Durga's children.
